Position Overview
VarcoMac LLC, a Legence company, is seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated Staff Accountant to support our accounting and finance team in Odenton, Maryland. This role is responsible for supporting financial reporting, compliance, and operational accounting activities while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information. The Staff Accountant will contribute to monthly and annual financial close processes, reporting, reconciliations, audit support, and internal control initiatives, and will be accountable for delivering timely and accurate financial data to support business operations. This position requires close collaboration with accounting, finance, operations, and external auditors to ensure successful execution of financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Partner with accounting, finance, and operational teams to support financial reporting requirements and business objectives.
    • Provide financial analysis, reporting, and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
    • Serve as a key contributor to month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounting activities.
    • Design, Technical, or Operational Execution
    • Support the month-end and year-end close process.
    • Prepare monthly reports related to projects, collections, billings, contracts, and Work in Process (WIP).
    • Prepare journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation.
    • Fully utilize ERP software to support financial and operational objectives.
    • Reconcile and balance general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.
    • Maintain and monitor roll-forward schedules to ensure accuracy and completeness.
    • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company accounting policies.
  • Project & Cross-Discipline Coordination
    • Coordinate with accounting, finance, project management, and operational teams to gather information required for reporting and analysis.
    • Participate in annual audits and quarterly review procedures, providing timely and accurate documentation to external auditors.
    • Support implementation and monitoring of internal controls and SOX compliance requirements.
    • Collaborate on process improvements and special projects that enhance financial operations.
  • Documentation & Communication
    • Prepare and maintain accounting records, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation.
    • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to internal stakeholders.
    • Contribute to reports, analyses, and ad hoc financial projects as assigned.
  • Leadership & Resource Management
    • Support organizational objectives through proactive problem solving and process improvement initiatives.
    • Manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Education & Credentials
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of two years of accounting experience in public accounting or corporate accounting environments.
    • Construction industry experience preferred.
    • Experience supporting financial close processes, reconciliations, reporting, and audit activities.
    • Working knowledge of ASC 606 and percentage-of-completion accounting preferred.
  • Technical & Professional Skills
    • Strong understanding of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines effectively.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
    • High ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality.
    • Adaptable, organized, and results-oriented professional.

Additional Notes

  • This is an in-office position located in Odenton, Maryland.

  • Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000, depending on experience.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed to support business objectives and team success.
